Yamunotri, which is 3,235 meters above ocean level in the region of Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand, is an otherworldly shelter in the northern spans of India. The current temple structure, a testament to resilience against the elements, is relatively recent. The Uniyal family of pujaris takes on the sacred duty of performing rituals, including the creation and distribution of prasad (sanctified offerings) and overseeing the pujas (ritual venerations). A distinctive facet of the ritual practice at Yamunotri involves hot springs where raw rice is magically transformed into prasad.
In the realm of mythology, Yamuna, the daughter of the Sun, shares a divine connection with Yama, considered his son. Legend has it that those who bathe in the Yamuna River are spared torment by Yama, the god of death, during their final moments. The ethereal setting around the near-freezing Yamunotri glaciers, adorned with steaming hot springs known as Kunds, adds a mystical touch to the narrative.
The Surya Kund, a pivotal thermal spring, holds prominence, where a pinch of rice or potatoes, tied loosely in a cloth and immersed in the Kund, emerges fully cooked after a few minutes – a sacred offering, ‘Prashad,’ carried home by pilgrims. The presence of ‘Divya Shila,’ a revered rock pillar, precedes the entry into the Yamunotri Temple, adding to the spiritual ambiance.
Surrounded by thermal springs, the Surya Kund takes center stage, playing a vital role in the ritualistic practices at Yamunotri.

Simply 0.5 km from Yamunotri, Janki Chatti is notable for its underground aquifers, tempting guests to take a renewing plunge.
Hanuman Chatti, where the Yamuna and Hanuman Ganga rivers converge, is 13 kilometers away from Yamunotri. It is the beginning point of the 3,307-meter-high Dodi Tal hike.
Situated 27 km from Barkot and 18 km from Yamunotri, Ayana Chatti captivates with its scenic beauty on the banks of the Yamuna River.
Elevated at 1,524 meters, Chamba offers a picturesque panorama of the Himalayas. The road from here leads to Mussorie, New Tehri, and Rishikesh.
The path to Yamunotri unveils itself opposite to Gangotri, with the road diverging from Dharasu, a location nestled between Rishikesh and Uttarkashi. Traveling 55 km further, Barkot emerges, providing a spectacular view of the Banderpunch range. Barkot is accessible directly from Delhi (334 km), passing through Saharanpur, Harbartpur, Nainbagh, and Naugaon. En route, Gangani, a pilgrimage site on the left bank of the Yamuna, captures attention with its holy tank, Gangayan Kund, and the imposing temple of Rishi Jamdagni in the village of Than.
Continuing along the motorable road, Phulchatti becomes the next milestone via Syanachatti, Ranachatti, and Hanumanchatti, spanning 42 km from Barkot. The journey from Phulchatti to Yamunotri involves an 8 km trek via Janakichatti, offering various means of assistance such as ponies, dandies, and kandies (baskets for carrying children). Janakichatti, also known as ‘Beef’ in revenue records, hosts a small temple dedicated to Narain Bhagwan. The climb from Janakichatti to Yamunotri is a challenging yet spiritually enriching 5 km ascent.

Bus Services: Regular Bus Services to Yamunotri operate from Rishikesh.
Lodging at the Yamunotri temple itself is limited to a few small ashrams and guesthouses. Pilgrims can find accommodation in the houses belonging to the ‘Pandas’ or the sole Dharamshala. Along the way, options include staying at Janaki Chatti, 8 km from Hanuman Chatti, tourist bungalows, PWD and Forest Rest Houses, and Dharamshalas.
